I made reservations to Pearl Manila days before typhoon Milenyo struck. So Jen and I were fortunate to stay in a cozy hotel room last Saturday.

A few months ago, we purchased a one-year membership card (4,500 php) from Pearl Manila. The card enables us to use the hotel's swimming pool for free, three overnight stay one of the hotel's "superior room" (with two complementary breakfast buffet), and 15 to 10% discounts on various hotel services.

Located along Taft and UN avenue (in front of the old NBI center), the Pearl Manila is nicely situated at the heart of Manila's shopping and business district. It is geographically located between SM Manila and Robinson's Place (it's a twenty minute walk or a short jeepney ride to these shopping centers).

Even before we booked a room, we heard a few negative comments about the hotel's facilities - such as dirty bedsheets, clogged plumbing, faulty electricity, etc. But fortunately, we did not encounter any of these problems.

On the day we checked in, the hotel had electricity. They managed to fix their facilities from the super typhoon and they were ready to take in visitors. There were a lot of families at the reception area, patiently waiting for a room. After half an hour of waiting, I finally got a room on the 16th floor.

Despite being fully booked, the hotel staff managed to accomodate everyone's needs. The hallways were rather noisy, the two elevators were always full, and the hotel's small swimming pool was filled with children.

Aside from swimming, hotel residents have access to cable TV, and a few restaurants at the ground floor. Those who want to go bar hopping would have to travel short distance to get to Malate.

Our stay in the Pearl was okay. The Superior Room was well furnished, although the room's lighting could be improved. The breakfast buffet comprised of dishes that come from nearby supermarkets, which you can cook in your own kitchen.

Overall, the Pearl Manila is a nice place for an overnight stay. The place lives up to its three star reputation and I think the most budget conscious visitors would find the place to be suitable to their needs.
